  Employment

To work in New Zealand it is important that you have the correct visa/permit. There are different types of visa/permit available depending upon how long you would like to stay in New Zealand and/or your future plans here.

  • Working Holiday

  • Work - Skilled employment

  • Work - Talent

  • Work to Residence

Each one of these options has different requirements that must be met for the application to be approved.

Working Holiday:

The New Zealand Working Holiday visa offers the opportunity for young people from countries with exchange agreements in place to travel around New Zealand, taking up temporary work while they are there. For most participating countries the Working Holiday Visa for New Zealand is issued for 12 months.

Work - Skilled employment:

Work permits under this category are based on an offer of employment in occupations on either the NZIS Immediate Skills Shortage List (ISSL) and/or the Long Term Skill Shortage List (LTSSL).

For a temporary Work Visa/Permit to be approved the New Zealand Immigration Service requires the applicant to have an offer of employment in an occupation that is included on one of these lists and that there is evidence that no suitable qualified NZ citizens or residents are able to fill the position.

Work - Talent:

Work permits under this category are based on an offer of employment in occupations on either the NZIS Immediate Skills Shortage List (ISSL) and/or the Long Term Skill Shortage List (LTSSL), with an offer of employment from an "accredited employer".

Work to Residence:

People that hold a work permit/visa (exluding working holiday visas) are entitled to apply for residence in New Zealand after they have worked here for a period of two years. This is not a guarantee that the application will be approved but working in NZ does provide an applicant with an additional 5 points under the skilled migrant category.
